I think this is a great task for a wanna be designer. You can start learning a lot more by doing than by just reading so I suggest that after you read some of the articles on this blog you actually take the time and do some visualizing on how would you improve your own home.
Start with something small, a corner, a wall or maybe even a room if you feel up to it. After that you need make a plan or a checklist on what you think needs improvement or could be better utilized.
The next big step is viewing the whole room, even if you’re only doing a corner and seeing if what you’re trying to add would make sense, and if the colors would align together or not.
Maybe what you need is a spark of color and in that case you would it would make a lot more sense to find something that meets the eye and bring that to the room.
After that, the real work starts. When you got all the planning all the viewing done then you need to start making whatever changes you decided to do.
Now here’s the tricky part, you should always go through a checklist and decide again if what you wanted to do in the first place would align with your new design. It’s not easy to remodel a corner or even a whole room and make it stand out, or just feel more cozy if that’s what you’re trying to do.
If you’re not sure about your design concept best thing and also easiest thing to do would be to take a picture and post it on a specialized forum/blog to get opinions or ask a girl. Simple as that. Most of them have pretty much mastered the art of matching colors and that helps them a lot when confronted with things like these.
